The 2025 international greenhouse gas and animal agriculture conference (GGAA) meeting will be held 5-9th October in Nairobi, Kenya. ( 9th GGAA Conference 2025 - International Greenhouse Gas And Animal Agriculture Conference (GGAA)

On the day prior to the meeting on the 5 ^th October 2025 , 10am – 4pm EAT – the ICAR Feed and Gas working group and the ASGGN Genetics network of the Global Research Alliance Livestock research group are holding a joint workshop to explore genetic selection for traits associated with greenhouse gas emissions, the latest global initiatives, measurement technology and the impact of breeding schemes on reduction of emissions from livestock

These workshops are aimed to be lively discussions addressing technical aspects of current global challenges – in each 90-minute session we will have 3-4 speakers with the aim to encourage a lot of views, discussion, advice and comments about shared issues. In particular, our focus is on applied research to enable the implementation of breeding schemes.

The meeting will be hybrid, and we invite participants to register by emailing linda.murray@agresearch.co.nz with your name and affiliation. In return you will receive a link to join the web page. The cost for attending online is US$10 to help us to cover AV equipment hire. Payment details will be sent once you register and are waived for students. Participants will be capped at ~120 online on a first come first served basis.

On the 14th and 16th of February the annual meeting of ASGGN and the Joint Network, respectively held meetings in conjunction with the GGAA conference in Melbourne, Australia

ASGGN annual meeting

On February 14th, we have had our annual meeting of ASGGN attached to the GGAA conference in Melbourne, Australia. Attached are the minutes of that meeting. It was a good day, and 45 people participated. We had a good mixture of presentations, discussions and looking forward to what is needed. In short, the first presentations were related to direct and indirect measurements of methane, and the discussion showed that the ultimate test for proxies is to select the extreme 5 to 10% animals on both ends based on the predicted methane production, and put them through the respiration chamber to record their real methane emission. The second session was on the microbial population, and there the discussion showed that there is a big need for better understanding of the underlying mechanisms to variations between animals. A working group is established to dive into that a bit further. The final session before the management meeting was on adaptation. Interesting results were shown from a study in Australia where the decline in production was used as a proxy for heat tolerance. The working group on adaptation will finalize their white paper showing the role of genetics in adaptation.

Management meeting ASGGN

During the management meeting it was decided that the economic value of methane emissions should get more attention in 2016. This work should then lead into a dedicated ASGGN meeting at WCGALP in 2018 in Auckland, New Zealand. At the end of the management meeting Jan Lassen from Denmark was elected as the next chair of the Animal Selection, Genetics, Genomics Network. So from now on, you will receive ASGGN-related emails from Jan, and no longer from me. I’ve enjoyed my function as a chair very much, but I would like to wish Jan a lot of fun with it as well.

JOINT NETWORK MEETING

On February 16th, the second joint network meeting was held, also during the GGAA. 50 people participated in the meeting. We started with scientific presentations related to all networks, and then we had discussions in smaller groups about what does someone need from networks to be actively involved? And where are possible synergies and collaborations? Attached are the minutes of that meeting. One action point is standing out, and that is the paper on the knowledge gaps. The Livestock Research Group will take the lead in this, but soon you will be contacted by the network coordinator to address the gaps that you see that should be filled. Please think about this already.

Meeting animal health network

The registration deadline for the annual workshop of the Animal Health Network is fast approaching.

The workshop will be held on Tuesday 15 March 2016 in the margins of the Annual Meeting for the Society of Veterinary Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine – SVEPM 2016 at Elsinore, Denmark

INFORMATION ABOUT 2 NETWORK MEETINGS AT GGAA CONFERENCE, MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA

Dear all,

Early 2016 the GGAA conference will be held in Melbourne, Australia ( http://www.ggaa2016.org/ ). The networks within the Livestock Research Groups will meet at several occasions:

The ASGGN will meet on Sunday, February 14th, 2016 (9.00-16.00h)
A joint network meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 16th, 2016 (16.30-20.30h)

ASGGN

The aim of the ASGGN meeting is to provide a forum for discussion when using genetic selection as a mitigation strategy. During the meeting we will be focusing on proxies, microbial population and adaptation (see attached agenda). However, we do encourage you to bring in other questions you deal with during the general discussions too.
When you register for the GGAA conference you can also register for this meeting by ticking the box “genetics of enteric methane and feed efficiency” ( http://www.ggaa2016.org/asggn-workshop.php ). If you are not attending the conference but wish to participate in this meeting, you can register by contacting the organisers ( registration@ggaa2016.com.au ) and tell them you want to register for this Satellite only.
At the end of the network meeting, a Management meeting will be held. One aspect then is the election of the new convenor. I was elected at the GGAA meeting in June 2013, and I have fulfilled this position with great pleasure during the past 2.5 years. However, I think it is time for a new energy. If you would like to be the new convenor for the next 2 to 3 years, please send me an email before January 1st 2016 (you can also be nominated if you cannot physically be in Melbourne at this time).

JOINT NETWORK MEETING

A first joint network meeting was held in Reading (UK) in June 2015. The participants indicated it would be good to continue these meetings in order to (1) Develop/improve communication and collaboration among GRA Livestock Research Group Networks; and (2) Explore interdisciplinary approaches for tackling the issue of greenhouse gas emissions from animal agriculture: identifying challenges, looking for synergies, creating collaborative research and funding opportunities, and defining remaining interdisciplinary questions.
Attached is a registration form. There is no registration through the conference-website required for this meeting. If you would like to participate and contribute to the meeting, please fill in the registration form and reply to me. Based on these registrations, the final agenda will be made up, consisting of scientific in-depth presentations and time for discussion to define synergies and collaborations. This will be sent to the participants of the meeting a few weeks before the meeting.

Joint network meeting

The first joint meeting of the Networks of the LRG was held on the 26th June 2015.

Research networks of the GRA Livestock Research Group (LRG) held a joint workshop at the University of Reading, United Kingdom, on 26th June 2015. The objectives were to improve communication and collaboration amongst the Networks and explore interdisciplinary approaches for tackling greenhouse gas emissions from animal agriculture. The workshop was attended by 52 participants representing 18 countries, from Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe. Presentations on each of the Networks and scientific presentations made for a very informative morning session and the afternoon breakout discussions addressed the benefits and roadblocks to enhanced collaboration within and between Networks and ideas for ways to increase joint activities.

The workshop report which details the key discussions, action points and outcomes from the workshop. The report is aimed towards all Network members and researchers/research funders interested in the links between animal health and GHG mitigation. Please share the report with interested colleagues.

SATELLITE – GENETICS OF ENTERIC METHANE AND FEED EFFICIENCY

This 1-day satellite meeting will cover technical aspects of application of genetic technologies to reduce enteric methane production and improve feed efficiency. The meeting will be a mixture of updates of working groups that target specific questions, invited speakers to share their experiences and results, and open discussions on the contribution that genetics can make to greenhouse gas mitigation and adaptation strategies.

The meeting is hosted by the Animal Selection, Genetics and Genomics Network (ASGGN). The network provides a forum for scientists working in the area of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ruminant livestock using animal selection, genetics and genomics techniques. The network was initiated at a May 2011 workshop in Auckland, NZ and endorsed by the Livestock Research Group of the Global Research Alliance on agricultural greenhouse gases. IMPROVING EFFICIENCY OF PRODUCTION AND REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

The aim of the workshop is to present the outputs from the project and discuss how they can be implemented to derive win-win solutions that benefit both the efficiency of ruminant production in the region and the environment, particularly in reducing enteric methane emissions.

The workshop, which is free to attend, will be invaluable to farming and breeding organisations, extension workers, research scientists, NGOs and policy makers particularly from Poland, Baltic States, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine.

The workshop will follow a full day session at the 66th EAAP Annual Meeting on Climate smart cattle farming and breeding. This session is jointly organised by the Cattle Commission of EAAP , RuminOmics and the METHAGENE project. By registering for the 2-day RuminOmics workshop you can obtain a special reduced day rate of 630PLN (approximately 150EUR) to attend the EAAP session on Climate Smart Cattle Farming and Breeding.

ASGGN 2014 MEETING VANCOUVER

Annual meeting of ASGGN in Vancouver, Canada

In August 2014, 80 people connected to the Animal Selection, Genetics and Genomics Network met for a satellite meeting attached to the World Conference of Genetics Applied to Livestock Production in Vancouver, Canada. The meeting included: (1) updates of the working groups of the Network, followed by (2) updates on projects related to feed efficiency and methane emissions around the world. After lunch two inspiring scientists were asked to update us on their ground breaking research projects. The meeting ended with a discussion on mitigation versus adaptation. A new working group of the Network was created, and their aim is to write a white paper on adaptation strategies, which will be presented at the next annual meeting in February 2016, attached to the GGAA conference in Melbourne, Australia. 1st Call for Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSM)

COST Action FA1302 - “Methagene – Large-scale methane measurements on individual ruminants for genetic evaluations”

Summary

We are looking to fund up to 3 short term scientific missions to develop linkages and scientific collaborations between participating institutions involved in the Methagene COST Action . Application deadline is April 30, 2014 (response within two weeks from the deadline).

Objective

Strengthening the existing networks and fostering collaboration by allowing scientists to visit an institution in another COST Country participating in the FA1302 Action . STSM should contribute to the scientific objectives of the COST Action; i.e., discuss and develop 1) protocols to harmonize large-scale methane measurements using different techniques; 2) easy to record and inexpensive proxies for methane emissions to be used for genetic evaluations; and 3) approaches for incorporating methane emissions into national breeding strategies. Applications of young researchers are especially encouraged.

Duration

From 5 working days to 3 months (or 6 months for Early Stage Researchers (less than PhD + 8 years) if approved by the management committee). The final duration of the STSM will depend on the budget allocated to the Applicant based on their request. STSM should be finished before October 31, 2014.

Eligibility

STSM applicant could be a postgraduate student or postdoctoral fellow, or be employed by or officially affiliated to an institution or legal entity (Home institution) from a country participating in this COST ACTION. Early Stage Researchers (less than PhD + 8 years) will be prioritized.

Rules

An STSM may only be approved from a Home institution in a COST participating country to a Host institution in another COST participating country.

Financial Support: maximum 2500 Euro (as approved by the Action MC)

This amount includes up to 500 Euro for the travel expenses and up to 80-100 Euro per day for subsistence costs.

Note: The payment of the grant will be executed after STSM has been finished and approved.

Application procedure:

The Applicant should:

1. obtain the agreement of the host institution, before submitting his/her application;

2. use the on-line registration tool to register his/her request for an STSM (see https://e-services.cost.eu/stsm );

3. after registration, download the formal STSM application and complete it with supporting documentation (CV, list of publications, motivation letter (half A4 page), letter of support from the home institute);

The Animal Selection, Genetics and Genomics Network (ASGGN) is focused on bringing together scientists working in the area of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ruminant livestock using animal selection, genetics and genomics techniques. Dr Yvette de Haas (the Netherlands) and Dr Natalie Pickering (New Zealand) are the conveners of ASGGN. The network was initiated at a May 2011 workshop in Auckland, NZ and endorsed by the Livestock Research Group of the Global Research Alliance on agricultural greenhouse gases. It provides a forum to debate and reach agreement on a variety of topics including:

common protocols for measurement of CH4 emissions(and associated traits)
calibrations of measurement procedures between countries
co-measurement of appropriate correlated and productive traits
formalised protocols for collection and storage of DNA from all animals measured and also protocols for collection and storage of rumen samples from all animals measured
criteria for data sharing and analysis (including meta analysis) among all contributing parties

We expect the ASGGN to meet formally once per year at an International Conference that members will be attending independently. The next meeting of ASGGN will be held in VANCOUVER, CANADA ON SUNDAY 17TH AUGUST 2014 as a satellite meeting of the World Congress of Genetics Applied to Livestock Production ( www.wcgalp.com ).

The workshop will comprise a number of short presentations designed to facilitate discussion of various topics surrounding FCE and DMI, such as the links between physiology and genomic predictions, using multi-breed data and how best to move from research to farm gate profit. After a small number of talks a discussion workshop will be held to give all attendees the opportunity to converse and communicate their opinions and knowledge regarding the session topic.

The workshop will be held at Agribio (the Centre for AgriBioscience; Bundoora, Victoria, Australia) in the Victoria room. Starting time is 12 noon on Monday the 28th October and the finishing time is 1pm on the 29th of October. Lunch will be provided on both days.

A THIRD AND FINAL FUNDING ROUND OF THE NEW ZEALAND FUND FOR GLOBAL PARTNERSHIPS IN LIVESTOCK EMISSIONS RESEARCH (GPLER FUND) OPENED ON MONDAY 5 AUGUST 2013.

The GPLER Fund is a contestable international research fund set up by New Zealand in support of the objectives of the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases, in particular its Livestock Research Group.

KEY FEATURES OF THE THIRD FUNDING ROUND

Maximum of NZ$10 million available for the third funding round. Successful projects are expected to be in the range of NZ$1-4 million and lasting up to four years in duration. Projects from Round 3 are expected to start from March 2015 and must end by 30 June 2019.
The third funding round follows the same two-stage application process as the previous rounds, beginning with submitting a short Expression Of Interest (EOI). Successful EOIs are then invited to submit full proposals. The call for EOIs is now open. EOIs must be submitted by 2 December 2013 (2pm New Zealand Standard Time). See Table 1 for further information on timings for Round 3.

The Rules and Guidelines for Applicants, and the Expression of Interest form are attached for your reference. Further details on the GPLER Fund, the grand research challenges, the application process for the third funding round and the requisite forms can be downloaded from www.mpi.govt.nz/nzlivestockemissionsfund . NEW EUROPEAN SCIENCE NETWORK ON METHANE CHALLENGES AND GENETICS IN RUMINANTS

A NEW EU-SUPPORTED NETWORK THAT AIMS, AMONG OTHER THINGS, TO IMPROVE MEASUREMENTS OF METHANE EMISSIONS FROM RUMINANTS IS CO-CHAIRED BY SCIENTISTS FROM AARHUS UNIVERSITY AND WAGENINGEN.

More than 50 scientists from more than 20 countries in Europe have joined forces in a network that will compile the existing knowledge from existing research projects on genetics and methane emissions from ruminants such as cows, goats and sheep.

The METHAGENE project is an EU COST-action project that has just received 4 million Danish kroner from the EU to cover travel costs and network activities. Heading the project is post-doc Jan Lassen from the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Aarhus University and Yvette de Haas -a research colleague from the Wageningen University.

Abstract:

Implementations of the sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer technique to determine methane (CH4) emission rates from individual ruminant animals involve measuring levels of both CH4 and SF6 in background air. In well-ventilated settings, including grazing, background sampling is straightforward and the algebraic correction for background levels is then usually minor. In a recent paper in this journal (Vol. 170, p. 265–276), Williams et al. drew attention to the much more careful consideration that is needed for background sampling in experiments that use the SF6 tracer technique with housed animals when both CH4 and SF6 levels can build up unevenly within the housing. This note builds on that study to show specifically and rigorously: (a) what is meant by background air, and that background corrections to CH4 emission estimates are unaffected by the recycling of CH4 and SF6 through inhalation of self-exhaled gases; (b) that in studies of the role of various treatments on CH4 emission rates, the siting of background samplers can crucially impact on findings; and, in particular, (c) that reports of a possible dependence of estimated CH4 emission rates upon the rate of SF6 release in the rumen are called into question due to the sensitivity of those findings to the siting of background samplers.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to quantify on-farm variation between and within cows in methane emissions measured during milking, and to determine which factors are related to this variation. Methane emission rate during milking (MERm) was recorded at milking using methane analyzers installed in automatic (robotic) milking stations for 215 cows over a period of 5 mo. Between-cow variation in MERm (mean 2.07, SD 0.629 g/min), was greater than within-cow variation and was related to variation in body weight, milk yield, parity, and week of lactation. Estimation of daily methane emissions from MERm data, using an equation derived from comparisons with respiration chamber data, produced estimates that ranged from 278 to 456 g of CH4/d and were commensurate with values predicted from metabolizable energy requirements for observed body weight and milk yield. It is concluded that methane emissions vary considerably between dairy cows housed under commercial conditions. This variation needs to be taken into account when performing inventories or testing mitigation strategies, but it might offer opportunities for genetic selection.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate whether measurement of methane emissions by individual dairy cows during milking could provide a useful technique for monitoring on-farm methane emissions. To quantify methane emissions from individual cows on farm, we developed a novel technique based on sampling air released by eructation during milking. Eructation frequency and methane released per eructation were used to estimate methane emission rate. For 82 cows, methanee mission rate during milking increased with daily milk yield (r = 0.71), but varied between individuals with the same milk yield and fed the same diet. For 12 cows, methane emission rate recorded during milking on farm showed a linear relationship (R2 = 0.79) with daily methane output by the same cows when housed subsequently in respiration chambers. For 42 cows, the methane emission rate during milking was greater on a feeding regimen designed to produce high methane emissions, and the increase compared with a control regimen was similar to that observed for cows in respiration chambers. It was concluded that, with further validation, on-farm monitoring of methane emission rate during milking could provide a low-cost reliable method to estimate daily methane output by individual dairy cows, which could be used to study variation in methane, to identify cows with low emissions, and to test outcomes of mitigation strategies.

GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS FROM CALF- AND YEARLING-FED BEEF

SIMPLE SUMMARY:

A spring calving herd (~350 beef cows) over two production cycles was used to compare the whole-farm GHG emissions among calf-fed vs. yearling-fed production systems with and without growth implants. Farm GHG emissions initially included enteric CH4, manure CH4 and N2O, cropping N2O, and energy use CO2. The carbon footprint ranged from 19.9–22.5 kg CO2e per kg carcass weight. Including soil organic carbon loss from annual cropping and carbon sequestration from perennial pastures and haylands further reduced the carbon footprint by 11–16%. The carbon footprint of beef was reduced by growth promotants (4.9–5.1%) and by calf-fed beef production (6.3–7.5%).

Methane Phenotyping Working Group formed at Cairns meeting.

Methane emitted from grazing ruminant livestock is produced by gut microbes. Differences in emissions measured between individual host animals are heritable and therefore can be selected for.

Phenotyping to rank individuals animals for their methane output is an incredibly complex proposition.

In order to make meaningful comparisons between species and countries we need to be measuring an agreed phenotype in a way that is consistent. Therefore, we a minimum set of standards and/or common procedures and protocols.

Following common principles will ultimately enable us to share data and genetic parameter estimates.

At it's Cairns Meeting in July, the ASGGN formed a Methane Phenotyping Working Group to review current phenotyping methods, and to establish a common protocol(s).

The first meeting of the MPWG is scheduled for early September 2012.
